Skunks in Ontario usually have their babies between April and June. It is around this time that females dig under decks, sheds, porches, and patios for shelter. Skunks are mostly harmless but will spray you if you get too close. Their spray is toxic and extremely odorous. It is so powerful that its radius can spread over 2km wide. So, while skunk babies are cute, it is best that you keep them off your property. Call Skunk Control today for an inspection.
Skunks are medium-sized mammals that are native to the New World. As omnivores, they feed on a variety of foods including insects, worms, frogs, lizards, eggs, and berries. This allows them to live in forests, deserts, mountains, and cities alike. In Ontario, skunks reproduce at the end of winter, when temperatures begin to rise. Females give birth between April and June. A typical litter ranges from 4 to 6 kits. Kits look like miniature versions of their parents and stay in their den until they are 8 weeks of age. By September, they are fully grown and able to fend for themselves.
How to Get Rid of Skunks
There are a few ways you can get rid of skunk. First, you can wait for them to leave on their own. Skunks usually leave their dens when winter is over or once their babies have grown. Second, you can practice humane harassment. Play music near the den or point a flashlight toward it to disturb the skunk inside. Skunks try to sleep during the day. You can also soak some rags in ammonia or apple cider vinegar and place them around the entrance to the den to mimic the scent of predators. The skunk will relocate if it feels unsafe.
What may be the most effective way to get rid of skunks is to use a one-way door. Look for the entrance of the den, then secure a one-way door on top of it. The door will swing outward, letting the animal out, but prevent its re-entry. You can get a one-way door from a wildlife remover or modify a trap yourself. Give the skunk a week or two to leave, then replace the door with an impenetrable mesh. Just be sure to use this method during midsummer or fall so as not to trap any babies inside.
